Sannio
About the wine
The Sannio DOC is a versatile and expansive appellation covering the entire province of Benevento in Campania. It encompasses a wide array of wine styles, ranging from crisp whites and sparkling wines to structured reds and passito dessert wines. The white wines are typically based on Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia, while the reds are dominated by Sangiovese. The DOC is notable for its inclusion of several prestigious sub-zones—such as Taburno, Solopaca, Sant’Agata dei Goti, and Guardia Sanframondi—which often highlight local specialties like Aglianico, Piedirosso, Fiano, and Greco. This regulatory framework allows for significant stylistic diversity, reflecting the varied terroir of the Sannio hills. While the base wines are approachable and intended for relatively early consumption, the sub-zones and specific varietal bottlings often demonstrate the deeper potential of the region's volcanic and limestone-rich soils, offering a comprehensive snapshot of Benevento's viticultural heritage.
