Bonarda dell'Oltrepò Pavese
About the wine
Bonarda dell'Oltrepò Pavese is a quintessential expression of the Lombardy region, centered on the Croatina grape. This DOC, produced in the hilly landscapes of the Pavia province, is celebrated for its versatility, appearing in both still and, most famously, frizzante styles. The wine is characterized by an intense ruby red color and a vibrant, vinous bouquet, often showcasing notes of black cherry and blackberry. On the palate, it typically offers a balanced profile—dry to semi-sweet, with a characteristic light tannic structure and a fresh, lively finish. The production is strictly tied to the traditional hilly viticulture of the Oltrepò area, where calcareous and clay-rich soils provide the ideal environment for the Croatina variety to thrive. By regulation, it must contain at least 85% Croatina, with small allowances for local blending partners like Barbera and Uva Rara, ensuring a consistent, authentic regional identity that has been protected since 1970.
