Castel del Monte
About the wine
The Castel del Monte DOC, named after the iconic 13th-century fortress, represents a diverse viticultural area in the Murgia region of Puglia. This denomination covers a wide spectrum of wine styles, including white, red, and rosato, as well as sparkling (spumante) and frizzante versions. The region is characterized by its karst limestone plateau, which provides a unique terroir for both indigenous varieties like Nero di Troia, Bombino Bianco, and Bombino Nero, and international grapes such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon, and Cabernet. The wines are generally marked by the Mediterranean climate, resulting in balanced, harmonious profiles. The DOC is particularly noted for its structured Nero di Troia and Aglianico reds, which can be produced as Riserva, requiring extended aging. The production zone, centered on the Alta Murgia, benefits from significant temperature fluctuations between day and night, contributing to the freshness and aromatic complexity of the wines.
