Puglia
About the wine
The Puglia IGT covers the entire administrative territory of the Puglia region in Southern Italy. This broad denomination allows for a vast array of wine styles, including white, red, and rosato, as well as frizzante, spumante, passito, and novello versions. The region is characterized by a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and significant temperature fluctuations, alongside diverse soil types, notably the classic 'terre rosse' (red soils) rich in iron and aluminum oxides. Viticulture in Puglia has ancient roots, dating back to Greek colonization, with traditional systems like 'alberello' still in use. The IGT provides a flexible framework for producers to showcase both indigenous varieties—such as Negroamaro, Primitivo, and Uva di Troia—and international grapes, emphasizing the region's historical viticultural identity while allowing for modern winemaking techniques. The disciplinare focuses on regional suitability rather than rigid stylistic constraints, reflecting the diverse terroir of the Italian heel.
