Salento
About the wine
The Salento IGT covers the provinces of Brindisi, Lecce, and Taranto in the Puglia region. This denomination is highly permissive, allowing for a wide range of wine styles including white, red, and rosato, as well as frizzante, spumante, passito, and novello versions. The area is characterized by a Mediterranean climate with mild winters and hot, humid summers, and a landscape ranging from the 'Arco Jonico' to the Salento peninsula. The soils are predominantly calcareous-clayey, which, combined with the region's intense sunlight and ventilation, provide an ideal environment for high-quality viticulture. The IGT is famous for its use of indigenous varieties like Negroamaro and Primitivo, though it permits a vast array of international and local grapes. The production is deeply rooted in historical traditions, with a focus on low-trained vines and small-parcel farming, which helps mitigate the impact of localized weather events like hail.
