Gioia del Colle
About the wine
Gioia del Colle is a distinguished DOC in Puglia, centered on the Murgia plateau, where the karst landscape and high-altitude vineyards (200–450m) create a unique microclimate. The appellation is most celebrated for its Primitivo, which thrives in the thin, mineral-rich 'terra rossa' soils overlying limestone. The wines are characterized by a distinct mineral backbone and vibrant acidity, setting them apart from other Puglian regions. The DOC covers a range of styles, including Rosso, Rosato, Bianco, and the specialized Aleatico. Primitivo-based wines are known for their depth, ranging from dry and velvety to slightly amabile, often displaying a complex evolution toward orange-hued garnet with age. The region's viticultural history, dating back to the Peucetii, is deeply tied to the traditional use of dry-stone walls and specific training systems like the alberello, which help manage yields in this arid, sun-drenched environment.
