Primitivo di Manduria
About the wine
Primitivo di Manduria is one of Puglia's most significant red wine denominations, centered on the Primitivo grape, known for its early ripening and ability to produce wines of remarkable depth and intensity. The DOC covers a specific area spanning the provinces of Taranto and Brindisi, characterized by a Mediterranean climate and diverse soil compositions ranging from clay-loam to sandy-clay. The wines are noted for their deep red color, which evolves toward garnet with age, and a complex, broad aromatic profile often featuring notes of plum. On the palate, they range from dry to off-dry, typically displaying a velvety texture, significant body, and high alcohol content. The production regulations mandate a minimum of 85% Primitivo, with the option to include other non-aromatic black grapes. The 'Riserva' typology requires a minimum of 24 months of aging, including at least 9 months in wood, resulting in a more structured and refined expression of this classic Apulian variety.
