Gravina
About the wine
The Gravina DOC, established in 1983, represents a unique viticultural enclave in the Murge plateau of Puglia. Unlike the warmer, lower-lying areas of the region, the Gravina vineyards are situated at altitudes exceeding 400 meters above sea level on limestone-rich, karst-influenced soils. This high-altitude, well-ventilated environment promotes a slower ripening process, resulting in wines characterized by notable freshness, mineral tension, and elegance. The DOC covers a diverse range of styles, including white, red, rosato, spumante, and a varietal Malvasia passito. The white wines, based primarily on Greco and Malvasia, are particularly esteemed for their sapidity and delicate aromatic profile. The red and rosato versions rely on a blend of Montepulciano and Primitivo. Historically significant as a crossroads of Greek and later monastic viticultural influences, the Gravina DOC remains a testament to the potential for refined, balanced wines in the Puglian landscape, standing in contrast to the region's more powerful, high-alcohol counterparts.

Production & aging
The production zone is located in the province of Bari, specifically encompassing the entire administrative territories of Gravina di Puglia and Poggiorsini, along with portions of Altamura and Spinazzola. The area is defined by the high-altitude Murge plateau, characterized by limestone soils, karst topography, and elevations generally above 400 meters, which provide a distinct microclimate compared to the surrounding Puglian plains.
