Irpinia
About the wine
The Irpinia DOC is a versatile and expansive appellation covering the entire province of Avellino in the Campania region. It serves as an umbrella denomination for a wide array of wine styles, ranging from crisp whites based on Fiano, Greco, and Falanghina to structured reds dominated by the Aglianico grape. The region is characterized by its mountainous, inland terrain, which provides distinct pedoclimatic conditions that favor slow grape maturation and high acidity. Beyond the standard varietal wines, the DOC includes spumante, passito, and liquoroso versions, as well as the specific 'Campi Taurasini' sub-zone for Aglianico-based reds. The wines are generally noted for their elegance, mineral backbone, and ability to express the unique volcanic and clay-rich soils of the Irpinian landscape, offering a comprehensive snapshot of one of Southern Italy's most significant viticultural territories.
