Leverano
About the wine
The Leverano DOC, established in 1979, represents a significant viticultural area in the Salento peninsula of Puglia. Centered on the municipality of Leverano, the denomination focuses on the expression of the Negroamaro grape for reds and rosés, and Malvasia Bianca for whites. Historically recognized for moving away from bulk wine production toward quality-oriented viticulture, the region benefits from a warm, Mediterranean climate and diverse soil types ranging from deep clay to sandy-loam. The wines are characterized by their balance and regional typicity; reds are typically harmonious with a delicate bitter finish, while whites offer fresh, characteristic profiles. The appellation includes a wide range of styles, including Riserva and Superiore versions of Negroamaro, as well as Passito and Dolce Naturale dessert wines. The shift from traditional 'alberello' (bush vine) training to modern espalier systems has allowed for greater mechanization and consistency, cementing Leverano's reputation as a serious producer of Salento's signature varieties.
