Lizzano
About the wine
The Lizzano DOC, located in the province of Taranto, Puglia, encompasses a diverse range of wines including red, white, and rosato, as well as specialized Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera bottlings. The appellation is deeply rooted in the Ionian Arc's viticultural history, dating back to Greek colonization. The wines are characterized by their Mediterranean expression, with the reds and rosatos primarily based on the Negroamaro grape, often blended with Montepulciano, Sangiovese, and other permitted varieties. The whites rely on Trebbiano Toscano, Chardonnay, and Pinot Bianco. The production zone benefits from a warm, ventilated climate and varied soils ranging from deep clay-loams to thinner coastal sands. The resulting wines are typically dry, harmonious, and balanced, with the 'Superiore' designation reserved for higher-alcohol, longer-aged Negroamaro and Malvasia Nera versions. The DOC also permits sparkling (spumante) and frizzante styles, reflecting the region's versatility in adapting traditional techniques to modern quality standards.
