Matino
About the wine
The Matino DOC, established in 1971, represents a traditional viticultural expression of the Salento peninsula in Puglia. The denomination is exclusively reserved for red and rosato wines, both of which are anchored by the Negro Amaro grape. These wines are characterized by their deep connection to the local 'terra rossa' soils and the warm, Mediterranean climate of the Lecce province. The Matino Rosso is known for its dry, harmonious profile and ruby hue, while the Matino Rosato offers an intense pink color and a distinctively vinous bouquet. The production is strictly regulated to maintain regional authenticity, prohibiting the use of additional descriptors like 'superiore' or 'riserva' to ensure the focus remains on the varietal purity of Negro Amaro, which must constitute at least 70% of the blend. It is a historic appellation that reflects the long-standing tradition of winemaking in the Gallipoli hinterland.
