Murgia
About the wine
The Murgia IGT covers a vast area in the Puglia region, specifically the province of Bari and parts of the BAT (Barletta-Andria-Trani) province. The territory is defined by a high-altitude limestone plateau characterized by karst topography, which provides excellent drainage and mineral-rich soils. These conditions, combined with a pseudo-steppe climate and constant ventilation, allow for a slower grape maturation compared to the rest of Puglia, resulting in wines noted for their elegance, freshness, and balanced acidity. The IGT is highly permissive, allowing for a wide range of styles including white, red, and rosato, as well as frizzante, spumante, novello, and passito versions. Producers may label wines by varietal if at least 85% of the grapes come from the specified variety. The disciplinare emphasizes the historical and environmental synergy of the Murgia plateau in producing high-quality, modern wines.
