Orta Nova
About the wine
The Orta Nova DOC, established in 1984, represents a specific viticultural area in the province of Foggia, Puglia. Located in the heart of the Tavoliere plain, the denomination focuses on red and rosato wines primarily based on the Sangiovese grape. The regulations allow for a blend of up to 40% of other regional varieties, including Uva di Troia, Montepulciano, Lambrusco Maestri, and Trebbiano Toscano, with strict limitations on the latter two. The wines are characterized by their dry, harmonious, and structured profiles. The red wines typically exhibit ruby-to-garnet hues with notes of red fruit and spice, while the rosato, often produced via the 'lacrima' (bleeding) method, offers a fresh and pleasant profile. The region's warm, arid climate and clay-limestone soils, combined with a long history of agricultural tradition dating back to Roman times, define the unique terroir of this DOC. It remains a testament to the historical importance of viticulture in the Daunia region.
