Provincia di Mantova
About the wine
The Provincia di Mantova IGT covers the entire administrative territory of the Mantua province in Lombardy. This diverse landscape ranges from the morainic hills near Lake Garda, which are particularly suited for white wines, to the alluvial plains along the Po River, which favor the production of structured red wines. The IGT is highly permissive, allowing for a wide range of wine styles including still, frizzante, passito, and novello. The region has a long viticultural history dating back to the Neolithic period and the Etruscans, with significant development during the Middle Ages under the influence of the Benedictine monks. The climate is transitional, shifting between Mediterranean and continental influences, which, combined with varied soil compositions—from gravelly morainic deposits to silty-clay alluvial soils—allows for a broad spectrum of varietal expressions. The disciplinare focuses on traditional cultivation practices and specific varietal labeling requirements.
