Roccamonfina
About the wine
The Roccamonfina IGT covers a diverse area in the northwestern province of Caserta, Campania, centered around the extinct Roccamonfina volcano. This volcanic influence is central to the identity of these wines, with the disciplinare noting that the soils—rich in pyroclastic material and 'Campanian Ignimbrite'—impart a distinctive 'fumè' (smoky) quality and a characteristic mineral bitterness to the wines. The IGT allows for a wide range of styles, including white, red, rosato, frizzante, and passito. Viticulture here has ancient roots, dating back to the Roman era, and has transitioned from high-yield systems to modern, quality-oriented spalliera training. The climate is generally temperate, benefiting from the volcanic topography and proximity to the Tyrrhenian coast, which provides favorable conditions for both indigenous and international grape varieties.
