Squinzano
About the wine
The Squinzano DOC, established in 1976, represents a significant viticultural area in the Salento region of Puglia, spanning parts of the provinces of Lecce and Brindisi. The denomination is deeply rooted in the historical use of the Negroamaro grape, which serves as the backbone for its signature red and rosato wines. These wines are characterized by their deep ruby color, intense ethereal aromas, and a full, harmonious palate. Beyond the traditional Negroamaro-based blends, the DOC includes varietal wines such as Susumaniello, Chardonnay, Fiano, Malvasia Bianca, and Sauvignon, as well as sparkling (spumante) versions. The production zone benefits from deep, clay-calcareous soils and a warm, Mediterranean climate, traditionally managed through the 'alberello pugliese' system, though modern trellising is increasingly common. The wines are known for their balanced chemical-physical profiles and distinct varietal expression, reflecting the long-standing human tradition of winemaking in this sun-drenched coastal territory.
