Tarantino
About the wine
The Tarantino IGT covers the entire administrative province of Taranto in the Puglia region of Southern Italy. The area is characterized by a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters, influenced by the Ionian Sea and local karst topography. The landscape is primarily hilly, with soils ranging from clay-limestone to sandy-loam. The IGT is highly permissive, allowing for a wide array of white, red, and rosato wines, including frizzante, passito, and late-harvest (uve stramature) styles. Viticulture in this region has ancient roots, dating back to Spartan colonization, and has evolved from traditional 'alberello' (bush vine) systems to modern trellising. The disciplinare emphasizes the use of local varieties, though it permits a broad range of international and regional grapes, provided they are authorized for the province of Taranto. The wines are noted for their balanced chemical-physical profiles and distinct organoleptic characteristics derived from the specific pedoclimatic conditions of the Ionian arc.
