Terra d'Otranto
About the wine
The Terra d’Otranto DOC covers a vast, historically significant area spanning the provinces of Brindisi, Lecce, and Taranto in Puglia. This appellation is notable for its broad ampelographic range, encompassing both international varieties like Chardonnay and traditional Puglian grapes such as Primitivo, Negroamaro, Malvasia Nera, and Verdeca. The wines range from crisp, fresh whites and aromatic frizzante styles to structured, warm reds and complex, sweet Aleatico. The region’s Mediterranean climate, characterized by mild winters and hot, humid summers, combined with diverse soil types—ranging from deep clay-loams to thin, sandy coastal soils—creates a versatile terroir. The DOC emphasizes traditional viticultural practices, including the use of 'alberello' (bush vine) and espalier training systems. The resulting wines are defined by their harmony and regional character, with the Rosso Riserva requiring a minimum of 24 months of aging, reflecting the area's commitment to quality production across a wide spectrum of styles.
