Terre del Volturno
About the wine
The Terre del Volturno IGT covers a vast area in the Campania region, primarily within the province of Caserta and parts of Naples. The denomination is defined by the influence of the Volturno River, which creates diverse alluvial soils and a favorable climate for viticulture. The IGT is highly permissive, allowing for a wide range of wine styles including white, red, rosato, sparkling, and passito. It is deeply rooted in ancient history, with many indigenous varietals such as Pallagrello, Casavecchia, and Asprinio—the latter famously associated with the traditional 'alberata aversana' training system. The disciplinare emphasizes the preservation of these ancient, autochthonous grapes, which were historically prized by the Bourbon monarchy and documented by Roman writers like Pliny the Elder. The wines are characterized by their strong link to the specific mineral composition of the local soils, which can vary significantly even between adjacent vineyard plots.
