Valcalepio
About the wine
Valcalepio DOC, established in 1976, represents the viticultural heritage of the hilly landscape between the Oglio and Serio rivers in the province of Bergamo, Lombardy. The appellation is defined by its diverse geological composition, ranging from schist-clay to argillo-calcareous soils, and a climate moderated by the proximity of Lake Iseo and the Orobie Alps. The red wines are primarily based on a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, resulting in structured, harmonious, and persistent wines, with the Riserva requiring extended aging. The white wines feature Pinot Bianco and Chardonnay, offering delicate and dry profiles. A distinctive specialty is the Moscato Passito, a sweet, aromatic dessert wine crafted from the Moscato di Scanzo grape, which undergoes a traditional drying process to achieve significant concentration and complexity. The region has a documented history of viticulture dating back to the 11th century, reflecting a long-standing tradition of quality production in the Bergamo hills.
