Valcamonica
About the wine
The Valcamonica IGT covers a mountainous viticultural area in the province of Brescia, Lombardy. Historically significant for its terraced vineyards, the region produces white, passito, and red wines. The production is characterized by 'heroic' viticulture, with vineyards situated on slopes up to 800 meters above sea level. The climate varies from the lake-mitigated southern zones to the cooler, narrower northern valleys, resulting in wines with notable acidity and mineral profiles. The disciplinare mandates a minimum of 60% of specific primary varietals for the base wines, while varietal-labeled wines (Merlot, Marzemino) require at least 85% of the stated grape. The region is known for its small-scale, traditional production, often managed by part-time growers who maintain the landscape and prevent hydrogeological instability. The wines are noted for their freshness, moderate alcohol levels, and distinct territorial character, reflecting the diverse sedimentary and metamorphic soils of the Alpine valley.
