Valtellina rosso
About the wine
Valtellina Rosso, also known as Rosso di Valtellina, is a red wine produced in the Sondrio province of Lombardy, defined by its reliance on the Nebbiolo grape (locally called Chiavennasca). The denomination is deeply tied to the dramatic, terraced landscape of the Rhaetian Alps, where vines are cultivated on steep, south-facing slopes between 300 and 700 meters above sea level. These high-altitude, sun-drenched terraces, supported by over 2,500 kilometers of dry-stone walls, create a unique microclimate with significant diurnal temperature shifts and excellent drainage. The resulting wine is typically elegant and refined, characterized by a ruby red color, delicate aromas, and a dry, lightly tannic palate. It is a testament to centuries of viticultural tradition in a challenging mountain environment, offering a lighter, more approachable expression of Nebbiolo compared to the more structured Valtellina Superiore DOCG.
