Barbera del Monferrato
About the wine
Barbera del Monferrato is a traditional Piedmontese DOC representing the historical heartland of the Barbera grape. Unlike its more restrictive neighbors, this appellation allows for a blend containing up to 15% of Freisa, Grignolino, and Dolcetto, which softens the naturally high acidity of the Barbera. The wines are characterized by a ruby red color, a vinous bouquet, and a dry, medium-bodied palate. The DOC includes both still and 'frizzante' (lightly sparkling) versions, the latter reflecting a long-standing local tradition of spring-bottled wines that undergo a natural secondary fermentation. The production zone spans the rolling hills of the Asti and Alessandria provinces, where calcareous, marly soils provide the ideal environment for the variety. These wines are intended for relatively early consumption, offering a vibrant, authentic expression of the Monferrato terroir without the heavy influence of extended wood aging.
