Barbera del Monferrato Superiore
About the wine
Barbera del Monferrato Superiore represents the pinnacle of Barbera production within the historic Monferrato hills of Piedmont. Recognized as a DOCG in 2008, this wine is crafted to showcase the depth and aging potential of the Barbera grape, which must constitute at least 85% of the blend. The remaining 15% may include local varieties such as Freisa, Grignolino, or Dolcetto. Unlike standard Barbera, the 'Superiore' designation mandates a minimum aging period of 14 months, including at least 6 months in oak barrels, which softens the grape's naturally high acidity and adds complexity. The resulting wine is typically ruby red, evolving toward garnet with age, offering an intense, ethereal bouquet and a dry, full-bodied, and harmonious palate. It is a testament to the terroir of the Asti and Alessandria provinces, where calcareous, marly soils provide the structure necessary for this long-lived, sophisticated expression of Piedmontese viticulture.
