Cisterna d'Asti
About the wine
Cisterna d'Asti is a red wine appellation centered on the Croatina grape, which has been cultivated in this area for centuries. Often historically referred to locally as 'Bonarda,' the wine is defined by its deep ruby color, intense fruity aromatics, and a palate that is typically delicate, harmonious, and occasionally vivacious. The production zone spans the hilly landscapes across the provinces of Asti and Cuneo, where the specific clay-calcareous-sandy soils impart a unique character to the Croatina, often noted for its distinctively fruity and slightly bitter profile. The DOC allows for a 'Superiore' typology, which requires a longer aging period and higher alcohol content. The wines are generally approachable and versatile, reflecting a long-standing tradition of viticulture in the region that remains distinct from the neighboring Roero area.
