Coste della Sesia
About the wine
Coste della Sesia is a versatile DOC covering the hilly landscapes of the Vercelli and Biella provinces in Piedmont. Established in 1996, the denomination serves as an umbrella for a diverse range of wines, including red, white, and rosato blends, as well as varietal wines based on Nebbiolo (locally known as Spanna), Croatina, and Vespolina. The red and rosato wines are typically Nebbiolo-dominant, while the white is exclusively Erbaluce. The region is characterized by varied soils—ranging from clay to sand and granite pebbles—which, combined with the hilly topography, impart distinct mineral qualities to the wines. The resulting profiles are generally dry, harmonious, and structured, reflecting the ancient viticultural heritage of the Sesia river basin. The DOC emphasizes the importance of terroir, allowing for the 'vigna' mention on labels to highlight specific vineyard sites for varietal wines, ensuring a clear link between the wine's character and its geographic origin.
