Fortana del Taro
About the wine
Fortana del Taro IGT is a regional designation from the Emilia-Romagna region, specifically centered in the province of Parma. The wines are primarily produced from the Fortana grape (locally known as Fortanella or Uva d'Oro), which must constitute at least 85% of the blend. The area is characterized by flat, clay-rich soils near the Po and Taro rivers, featuring a sub-continental climate with significant diurnal temperature variations. Historically, the Fortana grape has been cultivated in this area since the 15th century, valued for its vigor and adaptability to heavy soils. The resulting wines are typically red, often produced in frizzante or novello styles, known for their bright ruby color, fruity aromatics, and a flavor profile ranging from dry to sweet. These wines are traditionally paired with the rich, caloric cuisine of the Parma region, reflecting a long-standing local viticultural tradition.
