Gutturnio
About the wine
Gutturnio is a historic red wine denomination from the Piacenza province in Emilia-Romagna, defined by a classic blend of Barbera (55-70%) and Croatina (30-45%, locally known as Bonarda). This combination creates a wine that balances the vibrant acidity and structure of Barbera with the deep color, fruitiness, and soft tannins of Croatina. The DOC encompasses a wide range of styles, from the approachable 'Frizzante' (sparkling) to the more structured 'Superiore' and 'Riserva' versions, with the 'Classico' designation reserved for wines produced in the most traditional, historically significant hillside zones. The wines are typically characterized by their intense ruby color, vinous bouquet, and a palate that ranges from dry to slightly sweet, depending on the specific typology. It is a quintessential expression of the Piacenza hills, reflecting a long-standing local tradition of blending these two specific varieties to achieve harmony and longevity.
