Modena
About the wine
The Modena DOC represents the historic heart of Lambrusco production in Emilia-Romagna. This versatile appellation encompasses a wide range of sparkling (spumante) and semi-sparkling (frizzante) wines, including red, rosato, and white styles. The red and rosato versions are primarily based on the diverse Lambrusco family—including Sorbara, Grasparossa, and Salamino—which are celebrated for their vibrant acidity, floral aromatics, and refreshing, sapid character. The wines are defined by their traditional secondary fermentation, which can occur in either the bottle or autoclave, resulting in a fine, persistent mousse or a lively, evanescent foam. With a long-standing cultural heritage dating back to the Este dukedom, these wines are deeply tied to the clay-rich soils and continental climate of the Modena province. They are typically dry to off-dry, offering a harmonious, fruit-forward profile with delicate yeast notes, making them quintessential expressions of the region's culinary tradition.
