Valsusa
About the wine
The Valsusa DOC represents a unique expression of high-altitude 'heroic' viticulture in the Susa Valley of Piedmont. Situated along the Dora Riparia river, the region benefits from a distinct microclimate sheltered by the Alps, characterized by low summer rainfall and significant diurnal temperature shifts. These conditions allow for the cultivation of vines at elevations exceeding 850 meters. The DOC encompasses both red wines, often based on local varieties like Avanà and Becuet blended with traditional Piedmontese grapes such as Barbera and Dolcetto, and a white wine derived from the Baratuciat grape. These wines are known for their mountain character: they are typically elegant, aromatic, and possess moderate alcohol levels with vibrant acidity. The production is deeply rooted in historical traditions, including the use of stone-walled terraces, and the wines reflect the rugged, rocky terroir of the valley. The resulting profiles are fresh, fruit-forward, and harmonious, often displaying wild berry notes in the reds and floral, sapid qualities in the whites.
