Cortona
About the wine
The Cortona DOC, established in 1999 in the province of Arezzo, is a distinctive Tuscan appellation that embraces both traditional Italian varieties and international grapes. While Tuscany is synonymous with Sangiovese, Cortona has gained significant recognition for its successful adaptation of Syrah, which serves as the backbone of the 'Rosso' blend and stands as a flagship varietal in its own right. The appellation covers a diverse range of styles, including varietal wines like Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, alongside the traditional Vin Santo and the rare Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice. The wines are characterized by their elegance and structural integrity, with Riserva versions requiring extended aging to develop complexity. The production zone, situated near the Umbrian border and Lake Trasimeno, benefits from specific hillside microclimates that favor high-quality viticulture, resulting in wines that balance Mediterranean warmth with refined, harmonious profiles.

Production & aging
The production area is located in the eastern part of the Tuscany region, specifically within the administrative territory of the municipality of Cortona in the province of Arezzo. It borders the Umbria region and is situated near Lake Trasimeno, encompassing specific hillside terrains defined by precise altimetric limits (generally 260m to 700m a.s.l.) that ensure optimal exposure and drainage for viticulture.
