Sant'Antimo
About the wine
Sant'Antimo is a versatile DOC established in 1996, centered around the historic abbey of the same name in the Montalcino municipality of Tuscany. Unlike the neighboring Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino, which are strictly tied to Sangiovese, Sant'Antimo provides a flexible framework for both international and indigenous varieties. The denomination covers a wide spectrum of styles, including white, red, and the traditional Vin Santo and Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice. The production zone benefits from a Mediterranean climate with continental influences, characterized by significant diurnal temperature shifts and diverse soil compositions ranging from limestone to clay. This DOC allows producers to showcase specific varietal expressions—such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon, or Cabernet Sauvignon—provided they meet strict varietal purity requirements. The resulting wines range from fresh, aromatic whites to structured, age-worthy reds, reflecting the unique terroir of the Montalcino hills while offering winemakers greater stylistic freedom than the region's more rigid appellations.
