Costa Toscana
About the wine
The Costa Toscana IGT covers a diverse coastal territory in Tuscany, spanning the provinces of Massa Carrara, Lucca, Pisa, Livorno, and Grosseto. Established in 2010 to distinguish coastal viticulture from the broader regional IGT Toscana, the denomination allows for a wide range of wine styles, including white, red, rosato, novello, passito, and late-harvest (vendemmia tardiva) wines. The area benefits from a Mediterranean climate, with maritime influences from the Tyrrhenian Sea mitigating summer heat and ensuring optimal grape ripening. The geography ranges from coastal plains to hilly inland areas, with varied soil compositions including alluvial deposits, sandstone, and clay. The IGT is highly permissive regarding varietals, allowing any grape authorized for cultivation in the Tuscany region. Producers often utilize international varieties alongside traditional Tuscan grapes like Sangiovese, Vermentino, and Ansonica to create wines that reflect the unique coastal terroir.
