Elba
About the wine
The Elba DOC encompasses a diverse range of wines produced on the island of Elba, part of the Tuscan Archipelago. This historic viticultural area, shaped by varied geological substrates—from the granite of Monte Capanne to sedimentary and metamorphic soils—benefits from a warm, Mediterranean climate that favors healthy, concentrated fruit. The DOC is notable for its breadth, covering everything from crisp whites based on Trebbiano, Ansonica, and Vermentino, to structured reds dominated by Sangiovese. The island's tradition of passito wines, including Moscato Passito and the classic Vin Santo, highlights the local practice of sun-drying grapes to achieve intensity and complexity. These wines are characterized by their distinct mineral edge and sapidity, reflecting the island's unique maritime terroir. With a long history of small-scale, family-run production, Elba DOC wines offer a genuine expression of Mediterranean island viticulture, balancing traditional methods with the specific climatic conditions of the Tuscan coast.
