Monteregio di Massa Marittima is a diverse DOC located in the northern part of the Grosseto province in Tuscany. The appellation covers a wide range of styles, from fresh whites based on Vermentino and Trebbiano to structured reds dominated by Sangiovese. The region's varied topography, characterized by hilly terrain and diverse soil compositions—ranging from clay and marl to alluvial deposits—creates a distinct microclimate influenced by the nearby Tyrrhenian coast. The wines are known for their Mediterranean character, with the reds offering typical Sangiovese fruit and structure, while the whites exhibit bright, saline, and floral notes. The DOC also includes traditional Vin Santo and Vin Santo Occhio di Pernice, showcasing the area's historical commitment to passito winemaking. The production zone excludes valley floors, focusing on hillside vineyards that benefit from optimal exposure and drainage, resulting in wines that balance regional tradition with the specific terroir of the Colline Metallifere foothills.
