San Gimignano
About the wine
The San Gimignano DOC, distinct from the more famous Vernaccia di San Gimignano, encompasses a diverse range of red, rosato, and Vin Santo wines produced in the hills surrounding the medieval town of San Gimignano in the province of Siena. While Sangiovese serves as the primary pillar for the red wines, the appellation is notable for its historical openness to international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, and Pinot Nero, which have been successfully cultivated in the area's Pliocene-era sandy and clay-rich soils. The red wines are characterized by their ruby color, good body, and balanced tannins, with Riserva versions requiring at least 24 months of aging. The DOC also preserves the traditional Tuscan craft of Vin Santo, including the rare 'Occhio di Pernice' style, produced from dried grapes and aged in small wooden barrels. The resulting wines are recognized for their distinct sapidity and aging potential, reflecting a unique microclimate that bridges the Tuscan coast and the Apennine ridge.
