San Ginesio
About the wine
The San Ginesio DOC, established in 2007, represents a unique viticultural enclave in the Marche region, specifically within the province of Macerata. The denomination is distinctive for its dual focus: a structured red wine based on Sangiovese, and a traditional sparkling wine (spumante) crafted primarily from the local Vernaccia Nera grape. The red wine is typically a blend featuring Sangiovese as the backbone, complemented by international varieties like Cabernet and Merlot, resulting in a harmonious, ruby-red wine. The spumante, available in secco and dolce styles, showcases the versatility of Vernaccia Nera, known for its persistent fine perlage and characteristic bitter-almond finish. The production zone, centered around the town of San Ginesio, benefits from a sub-Apennine climate and calcareous-clay soils, which impart significant acidity and structure to the wines. This DOC reflects a long-standing local tradition of home-crafted sparkling wines, now elevated to a regulated, high-quality standard that bridges historical practices with modern enological precision.
