Verdicchio di Matelica
About the wine
Verdicchio di Matelica is a distinguished white wine appellation from the Marche region, historically significant as the first DOC recognized in the region in 1967. Unlike its coastal counterparts, the Matelica production zone is situated in an inland, high-altitude valley, creating a continental microclimate that yields wines with notable structure, acidity, and longevity. The primary grape is Verdicchio, which must constitute at least 85% of the blend. The wines are characterized by a pale straw color, delicate aromas, and a signature dry, harmonious palate often featuring a distinctive, pleasant almond-like finish. The appellation includes still, spumante, and passito styles, with the latter showcasing the grape's versatility through late-harvest concentration. The combination of calcareous soils and significant diurnal temperature shifts in this pre-Apennine valley provides the ideal conditions for the Verdicchio grape to achieve its full, complex expression.
