About the wine

The Sovana DOC, established in the Maremma area of southern Tuscany, encompasses a diverse range of wines including Rosso, Rosato, and varietal-specific bottlings such as Sangiovese, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Ciliegiolo, and the aromatic Aleatico. The production zone is deeply rooted in history, with viticulture dating back to the Etruscan period, utilizing the unique volcanic tuff soil of the Pitigliano and Sorano plateaus. The wines are characterized by their structural integrity and connection to the Maremma terroir. The Rosso and Rosato types are Sangiovese-based (minimum 50%), while varietal wines require at least 85% of the stated grape. The appellation is particularly noted for its 'Superiore' and 'Riserva' categories, which undergo extended aging in wood and bottle, resulting in wines of significant body, harmony, and aging potential. The Aleatico, produced in both dry and passito styles, highlights the versatility of this historic wine-growing region.
