Terre di Casole
About the wine
The Terre di Casole DOC, established in 2007, covers a specific viticultural area within the municipality of Casole d'Elsa in the province of Siena, Tuscany. The appellation is distinctive for its dual focus: traditional Sangiovese-based red wines and modern, Chardonnay-driven white and passito wines. The red wines range from standard blends to structured 'Superiore' and 'Riserva' versions, which require specific aging in wood and bottle to develop complexity. The white wines, particularly the Chardonnay-based versions, offer a crisp, harmonic profile, while the Passito is a rich, complex dessert wine made from dried grapes. The region's Mediterranean climate, characterized by significant diurnal temperature shifts and varied soil compositions—ranging from sandy-clay to alluvial deposits—provides an ideal environment for both indigenous and international varieties. The DOC emphasizes local production and traditional viticultural practices, such as specific planting densities and pruning methods, to ensure quality and reflect the historical winemaking heritage of this Sienese territory.
