Toscano
About the wine
The 'Toscano' or 'Toscana' IGT is a broad regional designation covering the entire administrative territory of Tuscany. It allows for a wide range of wine styles, including white, red, and rosato, as well as frizzante, passito, and late-harvest (vendemmia tardiva) wines. The disciplinare is highly permissive regarding ampelography, allowing any grape variety authorized for cultivation in the Tuscany region. Historically significant for its role in defining modern Tuscan viticulture, the IGT permits traditional practices such as the 'governo all'uso toscano' for red wines, which involves a secondary fermentation using partially dried grapes. The region is characterized by diverse pedoclimatic conditions, ranging from coastal areas to mountainous inland zones, with a predominance of hilly terrain. This IGT serves as a flexible framework for producers, accommodating both indigenous varieties like Sangiovese and international cultivars, reflecting the region's long-standing enological heritage and experimental tradition.
