Val d'Arbia
About the wine
The Val d’Arbia DOC, established in 1985, covers a diverse viticultural area in the province of Siena, spanning the hills between the Arbia and Ombrone river basins. This appellation is notable for its versatility, encompassing a wide range of white wines—including varietal bottlings of Chardonnay, Grechetto, Pinot Bianco, Sauvignon, and Vermentino—alongside a traditional white blend based on Trebbiano Toscano and Malvasia Bianca Lunga. The DOC also produces a rosato (minimum 50% Sangiovese) and a traditional Vin Santo, which is aged in small wooden 'caratelli' to develop its characteristic ethereal and aromatic profile. The wines are generally defined by their freshness, harmony, and a distinct mineral character derived from the region's calcareous and argillaceous soils. The production zone, which includes the territory of Siena and several surrounding communes, benefits from a Mediterranean-continental climate that ensures balanced ripening and aromatic complexity. The regulations emphasize traditional cultivation and vinification methods, resulting in wines that reflect the historic agricultural heritage of the Sienese landscape.
