Val di Cornia
About the wine
The Val di Cornia DOC, located in the coastal Maremma region of Tuscany, encompasses a diverse range of wines reflecting the area's unique pedoclimatic conditions. The appellation covers a broad spectrum, from crisp whites based on Vermentino and Ansonica to structured reds dominated by Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. The zone is characterized by its proximity to the Tyrrhenian Sea, with soils ranging from alluvial deposits to magmatic intrusions, providing excellent drainage and mineral complexity. The reds, particularly those designated as 'Superiore', undergo a mandatory 18-month aging process, resulting in wines of notable body, harmony, and longevity. The DOC also includes traditional passito styles made from Aleatico and Ansonica. With a history of viticulture dating back to the Etruscans, the modern Val di Cornia DOC represents a synthesis of traditional Tuscan heritage and a contemporary focus on quality-driven, terroir-expressive winemaking.
