Val di Magra
About the wine
The Val di Magra IGT covers a specific area in the Lunigiana region of Tuscany, bordering Liguria and Emilia-Romagna. The viticulture here is defined by a unique microclimate that blends Mediterranean and continental influences, characterized by significant rainfall and high diurnal temperature shifts, which favor the production of fresh, aromatic white wines and balanced, approachable reds. Unlike much of Tuscany, the region is not dominated by Sangiovese or Trebbiano, but rather by a diverse ampelographic heritage including Vermentino, Albarola, Durella, and Pollera Nera. The disciplinare reflects a historical tradition of 'viti maritate' (vines trained on live trees) and modern specialized vineyards, focusing on wines that express the specific terroir of the Magra river valley. The IGT allows for a wide range of varietal expressions, emphasizing local indigenous grapes alongside international varieties like Merlot.
