Breganze
About the wine
The Breganze DOC, established in 1969, covers a diverse range of wines produced in the foothills of the Vicenza province in Veneto. Nestled between the Astico and Brenta rivers, this area benefits from volcanic and alluvial soils that impart distinct character to its wines. The appellation is best known for the indigenous Vespaiola grape, which is vinified as a crisp, fresh white, a sparkling wine, and the prestigious Torcolato—a luscious passito dessert wine made from dried grapes. Beyond these, the DOC encompasses a wide array of international varieties including Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Nero, and Chardonnay, reflecting the region's historical openness to diverse viticulture. The wines are generally characterized by their balance, structural integrity, and, in the case of the Vespaiola-based wines, a notable acidity that provides longevity. The regulation allows for 'Superiore' and 'Riserva' designations, highlighting the potential for aging and quality refinement within this historic pedemontana zone.
