San Martino della Battaglia
About the wine
San Martino della Battaglia is a niche DOC situated in the morainic hills south of Lake Garda, straddling the provinces of Brescia and Verona. Historically defined by its unique geopedological conditions, the appellation was established to distinguish its specific terroir from the neighboring Lugana zone. The wines are primarily based on the Tocai Friulano grape, which thrives in the area's calcareous-clay soils, often mixed with stony debris. The standard white wine is characterized by a citrine-yellow color, a fresh and dry profile, and a signature subtle almond finish. The DOC also produces a prestigious 'liquoroso' (fortified) version, a historical specialty of the region that offers a complex, velvety, and harmonious profile with notes of honey and dried fruit, often benefiting from barrel aging. The production is limited, emphasizing quality over quantity, and remains a testament to the traditional viticulture of the lower Garda Riviera.
